It was a busy Easter Saturday for the members of NWMRT.
A call was received from PSNI Enniskillen (reporting 2 people overdue from exploring the cave complex within the Cladagh Glen area In County Fermanagh), who tasked the team and a search was carried out around the cave entrance by NWMRT, while our colleagues from Irish Cave Rescue Organisation (ICRO) searched within the cave system. Very early in the morning, ICRO members coming out of the cave notified that they had made contact verbally with the missing persons and that they were not injured. NWMRT remained on standby locally, while the missing persons were assisted from the cave by ICRO.
Then, on Saturday evening, NWMRT were tasked by Coleraine PSNI to begin a search of the area between Binevenagh view point and Benone beach on the North Coast, for a paraglider who had failed to make it to the landing zone arranged between him and a second paraglider who had then contacted the PSNI. Our colleagues from CRS were also tasked to search the lowland area.
A quick search of forest tracks around base of cliff line was arranged, followed by further search of the treeline between Castle Rock and Umbra.. There were several reported sightings of the paraglider making his way back toward cliff face and other locations. After a long and extensive search operation by several rescue agencies, there was telephone contact between the 2nd paraglider and his missing friend, who was confirmed as safe in Belfast.
